How To Propose…With Children
Are you getting engaged, planning to soon, or trying to drop subtle hints to that special someone in your life? Do you or your special someone have children? Blending families can encourage a variety of new and confusing emotions to arise. The last thing you should be worrying about is how to make this proposal exciting for everyone- including the kids. You’ve got enough on your plate. Let us help ease your nerves by sharing some ways on how to involve your little ones in the engagement surprise, and also share some family-friendly holiday inspired proposal ideas!
With various winter holidays coming up, you may be considering popping that special question. Between the stress of buying the perfect ring your partner will love, practicing your proposal speech in the mirror, or even finding a photographer that will encapsulate your love, adding your future soon-to-be fiance’s child(ren) into the mix, just may send you into a panic. Don’t worry. You’ve come to the right place.
Whether you have a toddler running around or school-aged children, there are many ways to include them in your proposal. Perhaps you could take advantage of a local Christmas tree farm and pop the question there! Christmas tree farms are an all age-inclusive activity that is sure to keep your children entertained and included in the special moment! The secret bonus? Immersing yourself in nature just may help keep those nerves at bay. Imagine walking down the rows of tall trees, your favorite Micheal Buble song playing overhead, your partner on your arm, the kids playing hide and seek between the trees, laughing, smiling, creating new traditions, and breathing in the distinct smell of freshly cut Douglas Fir Christmas trees. Involving the kids should be a breeze (no pun intended)! Imagine the kids looking at each tree, pointing to their favorite one, and talking about what ornaments will go where once the tree has been brought to your new home, in your new family room. As everyone begins to unravel the newspaper covered ornaments that were tucked away in the basement all year long, just waiting for this very moment to come, having the children pass a ornament to your partner with the engagement ring nestled inside and then turning around to see you on your knee, ready to ask those magic words, would surely be a Christmas to remember indeed.
Don’t celebrate Christmas? No problem! Strolling the city’s square for the Winter Market goodies is another family-friendly proposal location. With all of the vendors, sweet treats, yummy smells, ice skating, and carnival rides, your children will be guaranteed to have something to do…and you will too! Your options on how and where to propose at a Winter Market are endless; from a family ride on the merry-go-round to getting a group caricature drawing (but really the artist is writing the big question), to pretending to all fall, in unison, on the ice skating rink around your partner…regardless of what you choose, I can guarantee wholesome laughs and memories are to be had.
Wanting to use your PTO days before the new year? How about a family trip? Taking a trip to a ski resort or an indoor water park is a great idea for those who like to have options of indoor and outdoor activities. You could spend time hitting the slopes, riding some gnarly snow tubing hills, or hike through the trails. In the evenings, you could spend time curling up by the fireplace with some hot cocoa, play games in the game room, or swim laps in the indoor pool (or watch the kids swim laps while you and your partner soak in the hot tub). You and the kids could prepare a homemade meal to share together and confess your commitment there. You and the kids could carve the question at the peak of the hill, in the crispy, crunchy white snow while hiking the trails. You could get custom made towels that write out that special question and as you all unfold your towels to dry off from swimming, your soon-to-be fiance will certainly be surprised and the children will feel a part of the journey towards immersing into a blended family.
Maybe you want to propose this winter season, but aren’t necessarily a “cold weather person,” or you may not have time for a little getaway. There are a number of proposal ideas that are still doable, so don’t get discouraged just yet.
There are many festive ways to propose that can be carried out within your home or your partner’s favorite restaurant. You can call the restaurant ahead of time to get them in on the plan, create a “movie” that depicts your love story timeline and watch it with the family, surprise them after the New Year’s Eve countdown kiss and celebratory screams and jumps, or get creative with playing board games.
OK so, maybe you want to propose, want the kids around for the photos and what not, but not necessarily involved in the proposal. We’ve got you covered there too! Another way to incorporate your kids in on the special moment without being in the special moment, would be to have us, Yours Truly, to come help for the day! Yours Truly will come to wherever you are and can step in at any point of the process to entertain the kids; that way, you and your partner can focus on what’s important in that moment- creating the first chapter of your very special story.
